Super Fruits Mix

スーパーフルーツミックス<br>Super Fruits Mix

Alishan’s first ever self-made trail mix! Drawing on our Taiwanese roots this is not your average mix of raisins, almonds and sunflower seeds. This is a tropical tasting blend of coconut and banana with a healthy boost of goji berries, alongside pumpkin seeds, sultanas, cashew nuts, apricots and mulberries. Goji berries have been in the news a great deal recently due to their health benefits; they are after all the only fruit to contain all the essential amino acids and have an impressive amount of protein. Little is yet said of the mulberry though – another tasty, nutrient rich food. The mulberry tree (Kuwa) is common in Japan but the mulberry never really took off as a dried fruit. They are sweet and chewy with a mild flavor and well worth seeking out.  Every type of nut, berry or seed has a different balance of vitamins and minerals and the greater variety you can introduce into your diet the better off you’ll be. Interactions between various food types are also well documented, for example, eating citrus with spinach will increase your intake of iron. Another great reason to eat a variety of foods and not just concentrate on those highlighted in the news.

The label ‘super food’ has become a much bandied about term and if the truth be known, many less advertised berries and grains can be just as good, if not better for you than the highly publicized super-produce. A healthy diet is a balanced diet with lots of variety, whether it be the now-fashionable goji berry or the humble cabbage. There is no single food that will cure all ills; these are not magical crops that contain nutrients that can’t be found anywhere else. These are simply foods which are more nuritionally dense than others, yielding more health benefits per forkful.  This is good news though, as it means adding just a few of these nutrient rich fruits, nuts, seeds or grains to a dish will increase the health benefits without breaking the bank. We had great fun coming up with our tropical blend and encourage you to have a go at making a mix of your own. Are you interested in any nuts, berries or seeds that you can’t find in our catalog? Let us know and we’ll see if we can find some.
