Second Harvest Japan, also known as 2HJ, is a well established NGO in Japan that is working to create a new public asset – a food safety-net – to ensure that people have enough food. They match surplus food with unmet need. While Japan is a developed country, there are nearly 20 million people living below the poverty line. At the same time, there are very few places where those in need can access food assistance. This reality has become more acute this year with the corona virus pandemic.

Since its incorporation Tengu has supported Second Harvest Japan by sharing its surplus as well as items we can no longer sell to you. We love the idea that even if cannot make money from a product, it can still become a benefit to someone in our community.

In July of this year 2HJ began operations in Okinawa. With a poverty rate of over 30% and a decimated tourism industry, the prefecture is hurting. By the end of December 2HJ will have delivered 10,000 food packages to families in need. While this is indeed a great achievement for them, it causes a tremendous strain on food resources. In addition to providing food to 300 welfare institutions, NPOs, and faith-based groups they also provide food directly to families in the Kanto area. Starting in April this year they saw a dramatic increase in the number of families seeking assistance. The result of this increase plus the new project in Okinawa is a shortfall in food. To deal with this shortfall they launched a campaign, “Look Around, Ask Around” to encourage people to see what food they might be able to donate and to reach out to their network and ask what others could do. They adopted the Okinawa word, ゆいまーる yuimaru, which means to help each other. If you know of anyone who can help 2HJ or if you have any questions concerning donations, please contact yuimaru@2hj.org

To quote Charles, CEO of Second Harvest Japan (shown modeling his 2HJ mask in the top photo), “2020 has been a challenging year. But working together we can make the holidays and the start of 2021 just a little brighter and better. We can make yuimaru come alive and really see how surplus can be matched with unmet need.
