フェアトレードコーヒーのパイオニア、福岡のウィンドファーム

ウィンドファームの創立者、中村隆一さん。市民運動家、チェルノブイリの子供たちへの支援を続ける環境運動家として知られています。もともと映画監督を目指していたころ水俣病患者に出会ったことをきっかけに環境問題、有機農業に関心を持ち始めました。生活協同組合に就職して無農薬野菜の産直活動に尽力。チェルノブイリ原発事故をきっかけに、生活協同組合を退職して1987年有機農産物センターを設立して無農薬野菜、無添加食品や石けんなどの販売をはじめました。しかし間も無く病に倒れ、闘病中に「途上国にコーヒー栽培をきっかけとして有機農業を広めたい」、「不公平な貿易関係を無農薬コーヒーの産直で改善していきたい」という考えに至り、復帰後コーヒーに特化していきました。まだ日本にオーガニックコーヒーが流通していなかった頃のことでした。

Wind Farm, a pioneer of fair trade coffee

Wind farm founder, Ryuichi Nakamura, is known as a an environmental activist who continues to support the children of Chernobyl. Originally aiming to be a film director, Mr. Nakamura became interested in organic farming when he met a patient suffering from Minamata disease, a neurological syndrome caused by mercury poisoning. He began working for a cooperative committed to the production of pesticide-free food, but in the wake of the Chernobyl nuclear accident he established the Organic Farm Products Center and began selling organic foods, additive-free foods and soaps. However, due to ill health he had to shift his focus to the spread of organic farming in developing countries through coffee cultivation. He also wanted to improve the unfair trade relations through the production of pesticide-free coffee.

1993年、中村さんはブラジルでジャカランダ農場のカルロスさんに出会いました。すでに無農薬栽培に取り組むコーヒー生産者から産直を開始していましたが、心の通じ合う生産者にいまだ出会えず探し求めていた頃のことです。カルロスさんのジャカランダ農場はこれまで見たどこよりも土が軟らかく、手で土を掘ることができました。コーヒー園全体に様々な昆虫が息づき、小鳥の鳴き声が絶えず、遊んでいる従業員の子供、お年寄りをたびたび見かけました。農薬を使う通常のコーヒー園では虫や小鳥はもちろんいないし、危ないので子供が立ち入れないようになっていました。カルロスさんは、「本当に豊かな生活とは、自然と共にあり、次の世代に希望を残していくことではないでしょうか」と中村さんに話し、二人は意気投合し提携していくことを誓い合いました。

In 1993, Mr. Nakamura met Carlos of Jacaranda Farm in Brazil. Mr. Nakamura had already started working on pesticide-free cultivation but was still searching for a producer to work with. Carlos’ Jacaranda farm had beautiful soil that was soft enough to dig by hand. There were many insects in the coffee garden, birds could be heard in the canopy and children played between the trees. In ordinary coffee gardens the use of pesticides mean the gardens have no wildlife and are too dangerous for children to enter. However, contrary to the majority of coffee farmers, Carlos believed that “A truly affluent life is one with nature and that leaves hope for the next generation.” Mr. Nakamura had found his producer.

小さな生産者はどんどん貧しく

カルロスさんには近代農業に対する憤りがありました。「近代農業は多額の投資を強要します。しかし生産者には見返りはありません。農薬、化学肥料、農業機械を販売する商売人と、大量にコーヒー豆を生産する巨大農場と、それを買う商社だけがますます儲けていくシステムのなかで、小さな生産者や生産基盤を持たない農村労働者はますます貧しくなっていきます」　。

「有機農業は自然を痛めません。多くの手間を必要とするため、たくさんの人の仕事をつくりだしてくれます。」

カルロスさんはもともと農薬に危機感を持っており自分の農場で使う農薬は少量のみ。それでも農薬を散布した後に頭痛を訴える従業員が現れ、ついに農薬の使用を停止、つづき化学肥料も使わない有機栽培への挑戦が1993年スタートしたのです。ジャカランダ農場では、農場に住むスタッフは家族同然。従業員の子供たちは全て小学校に通え、進学したい場合もその機会を与えられていました。農場の設備投資への資金援助はウィンドファームが行なっています。

Small producers are getting poorer and poorer

Carlos felt that rather than helping small producers and rural workers, modern agriculture benefitted the merchants selling pesticides, fertilizers and machinery, and pushed producers into ever larger farms that could produce large quantities of coffee beans. “Organic agriculture doesn’t hurt nature. It takes a lot of work and creates many people’s jobs,” Carlos says.

From the beginning of production, Carlos disliked using pesticides and used only the minimum he felt necessary. However, after spraying, some employees complained of headaches so he finally stopped using pesticides entirely and took up the challenge of organic farming in 1993. At Jacaranda Farm, the staff living on the farm are like a family. All the children of the employees are able to attend elementary school and are given the opportunity to go on to higher education. Financial support for farm capital investment is provided by Wind Farm.

30-50％増しでの買取

カルロスさん自身が直接輸出するという形で直接取引きが実現しました。上質コーヒー相場の30-50％増しの買取金額で、相場が下がっても生産原価は必ず保証、代金はコーヒーが日本に届く前に支払われました。日本の消費者から届く「おいしかった」というメッセージも農場のみんなを喜ばせました。これまでは、自分たちのコーヒーがどんなラベルをつけられて誰に飲まれているのかもわからなかったからです。ジャカランダ農場には他のコーヒー会社が、中村さんより高値で購入を打診してきましたが、カルロスさんは、中村さんに長期の提携を約束してくれたのでした。

現在ウィンドファームは提携農場を増やし、メキシコ、東ティモール、エクアドル、グアテマラ、南インドの農場からコーヒーを仕入れています。扱うのは全てフェアトレード＆オーガニックです。焙煎は、はじめ中村さんが独学で習得したものでしたが、いまでは2人の焙煎士が、気温、湿度、豆の状態をみながら慎重に焙煎。日本中の300店のカフェ、飲食店に届けられています。生産者へ寄付システムも充実しています。いらなくなった古本やDVDで気軽に寄付もできます（トセパン基金）。

Purchasing at 30-50% more

Carlos realized that by working with Mr. Nakamura and exporting directly, the purchase price was 30-50% higher than the quality coffee market. Even if the market price dropped, the production cost was guaranteed, and the price was paid before the coffee arrived in Japan. The coffee’s popularity in Japan also pleased everyone on the farm. Until working with Wind Farm, the producers didn’t know how their coffee was labeled or who was drinking it. Other coffee companies on Jacaranda Farm have consulted with Mr. Nakamura, but Carlos and Mr. Nakamura have retained their long-term partnership.

Wind Farm now has many more affiliated farms and is brewing coffee from Mexico, East Timor, Ecuador, Guatemala and South India. All varieties handled are Fair Trade & Organic. Initially Mr. Nakamura roasted the beans himself, but now employs two roasters who control the temperature, humidity and quality of roasting for the best possible flavor. The coffee is delivered to 300 cafes and restaurants all over Japan. There is also a donation system where you can easily donate used books and DVDs that you no longer need (Tosepan Foundation).
