History

1980年代のモンタナ州では、レンズ豆を育てることはおろか、食べたことがある人もほとんどいませんでした。しかし、ある小さな会社がその状況を一変させました。

タイムレスシード社は、4人の有機農家によって作られました。デイビッド、トム、バド、ジムです。ジムは、29歳の時に父親が農薬の影響でパーキンソン病になったことをきっかけに、有機農業に転向しました。デイビッドの家族は、1980年代のモンタナ州の多くの農場と同様に、大量の合成肥料と農薬を使用して小麦と大麦を栽培していました。その結果、モンタナ州の土壌は劣化し、害虫や雑草が大量に発生するようになりました。

In 1980’s Montana, very few people had ever eaten lentils, let alone grown them. One small company would soon change that forever.

Timeless Seeds was created by four organic farmers: David, Tom, Bud, and Jim. Jim turned to organic farming after his father contracted Parkinson’s Disease due to pesticide exposure at the age of 29. David’s family was growing wheat and barley using large amounts of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, like many Montana farms in the 1980s. Over time, these practices were degrading Montana’s soil, and causing population explosions of pests and weeds.

It didn’t make sense to keep planting monocultures of wheat and barley, for economic and environmental reasons. But what crops could be grown both abundantly and sustainably in Montana’s arid climate? One answer was lentils.

Today

Thanks to the efforts of growers like Timeless, Montana is now the #1 producer of lentils in the U.S. Within Montana, Timeless is the largest organic producer of lentils and chickpeas. Lentils and chickpeas are sourced from about 50 family farms, mainly located in Montana. The sizes of the farms vary from 325 hectares to 2,400 hectares.

Bud and David, the only two founders who currently own farms, have leased their farms to the next generation of farmers. These farmers are young—in their thirties and forties—and are organically farming a variety of crops and livestock.

The company is currently focusing on educating farmers in sustainable agriculture. Annual winter meetings feature topics like soil health research and organic farmers’ management techniques. Timeless’ staff agronomist conducts one-on-one free consultations with growers, and regularly visits the farms during the growing season.

FoodExの展示会で出会ったジャックとデビッドは、自分たちと多くの共通点があることに気づきました。二人とも地方で育ち、1970年代に大学を卒業し、オーガニックやサステイナブルな食品に興味を持っています。ジャックは何度も「アメリカに残っていたら、デイビッドのような人間になっていただろう」と語っています。

When Jack and David met each other at a FoodEx trade show, they realized they have a lot in common. Both grew up in rural areas, graduated university in the 1970’s, and have interests in organic and sustainable food. Jack has said numerous times, “I would’ve become someone like David had I stayed in the U.S.”
